Puck, a digital media company and news site, announced that a Waymo robotaxi accident in Santa Monica has raised safety concerns as the company plans to expand operations to Florida.

The incident involved a Waymo autonomous vehicle striking a child pedestrian who stepped out from behind an SUV. According to Puck, the vehicle was traveling at 17 miles per hour and braked to 6 miles per hour at impact. The company said that its analysis indicates a human driver would have made contact at 14 miles per hour in the same scenario. This event has sparked broader debates on autonomous vehicle risks (Puck).

Safety experts have expressed concerns about Waymo’s upcoming introduction of fully driverless robotaxis in Miami. The Miami Herald reported that experts question the vehicles’ ability to handle unpredictable elements such as animals or children. The article notes that federal oversight typically occurs after incidents, leaving public safety reliant on company data which cannot be independently verified. These issues raise questions about reliability in Florida’s urban environments.

Waymo also faces scrutiny in Austin, Texas, where multiple instances of vehicles illegally passing stopped school buses carrying children have been documented. <a href="https://www.goodmorningamerica.com/news/story/waymo-responds-safety-concerns-amid-investigation-incidents-caught-128102923′>Good Morning America said that school district officials recorded at least 19 such events since August and have requested restrictions on operations during school hours. This highlights national concerns over autonomous systems’ compliance with traffic laws and potential risks to vulnerable road users.

Puck is a digital media company founded in 2021 that focuses on the intersections of Wall Street, Washington, Silicon Valley, and Hollywood. It operates with a model where journalists are partners in the business and provides reporting through newsletters, podcasts, and articles (Puck).

“This event has sparked broader debates on autonomous vehicle risks,” Puck said.
