The U.S. Census Bureau has released the Business Formation Statistics (BFS) for January 2026. The BFS provides data on new business applications and formations across the United States and Puerto Rico. This information is released monthly and covers both seasonally adjusted and unadjusted figures.

The BFS is a standard product from the Census Bureau, created in partnership with economists from the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, the University of Maryland, and the University of Notre Dame.

The full dataset includes 12 series—four focused on applications and eight on formations—offering statistics at national, regional, and state levels. For Puerto Rico, four monthly business application series are also available as part of this release.

“There is no news release associated with this announcement. Tip sheet only,” according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

Business Formation Statistics help track trends in entrepreneurship by measuring new business activity over time.
