In her three semesters at Florida A&M University (FAMU), transfer student Nailah Barnes has quickly established herself as a leader on campus. Barnes, a third-year public relations major who transferred from Tennessee State University, has taken on multiple roles in academics and student life.

Barnes is currently Miss 1989 for the Progressive Black Men, Inc. (PBM) Royal Court. She also joined the FAMU Elite Dance Squad in Spring 2025, contributes to Journey Magazine and 90.5 FM WANM The Flava Station, and works as a video operations intern for FAMU Athletics.

Over the summer, Barnes interned at the ESSENCE Festival of Culture in New Orleans through Creative Girl Connect. During this internship, she worked with Cocoa Petals, a natural skincare company.

Barnes attributes her motivation to making the most of her time as a transfer student. She described using even brief moments during her internship to network with companies she admires.

Members of PBM Royal Court praised Barnes for her leadership and influence on campus culture. “Nailah walked into a tradition with a lot of history and expectations, and she carried herself with poise because she embodies what it means to be a student leader at FAMU,” said Miss Black PBM Kamayah Campbell.

“Nailah is passionate about all people, but transfers have a special place in her heart,” said Miss PBM Nikiyah Brown.

Barnes said she hopes her journey encourages other transfer students at FAMU: “I want people to know that even if you come in later, you can still create your own legacy.”

Treyvious L. Copeland, a second-year Doctor of Pharmacy candidate, noted Barnes’ impact: “As Miss 1989, she’s made the title her own with grace and authenticity, setting a powerful example for transfer students and showing that you can make a lasting impact no matter where your journey starts.”

Despite balancing several responsibilities and academic work, Barnes remains focused on leaving an impression at FAMU. “My time at FAMU is short compared to some, but I’m determined to leave an everlasting mark,” she said.

Barnes’ story highlights how determination can lead to leadership opportunities for students entering college at any stage.

“It hasn’t been easy, but it’s worth it to know that I’m making an impact,” Barnes said.
