On September 10, the Tallahassee Police Department responded to a call about 19-year-old Octavious McCaine, who had left his home in an agitated state and was considered potentially violent. Officers began searching areas where he was known to go.
Later that evening, at around 7:35 p.m., officers were called to Cascades Park after reports of a person in distress. Within minutes, the Consolidated Dispatch Agency received several 911 calls reporting stabbings in the park. Officers already nearby responded quickly. Two adult female victims were taken to a local hospital with injuries that are not life-threatening.
The suspect fled toward a fenced retaining wall, climbed over it, and jumped into a pond inside the park. The Leon County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team later recovered McCaine from the water; he was pronounced dead at the scene. Initial findings suggest McCaine was both the person previously reported as being in distress and responsible for stabbing the two women.
“This was a deeply unsettling incident, and our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families and the witnesses who were impacted by this attack,” said Chief Lawrence Revell. “I am grateful for the quick and coordinated response from multiple units within the Tallahassee Police Department, as well as the Leon County Sheriff’s Office, Capitol Police, Tallahassee Fire Department, and Leon County EMS. Together, their action prevented further harm.”
The police department will increase its presence at Cascades Park to reassure visitors.
While investigators continue to look into what motivated the attack, initial information suggests that McCaine was experiencing a severe mental health episode during these events.
Chief Revell stated, “We recognize that random acts of violence are especially frightening for a community. While such incidents are rare, they serve as a reminder to remain vigilant and look out for one another. Tallahassee is a strong, resilient city, and together we will continue to ensure our parks and public spaces remain places where families and friends can gather safely.”
The investigation remains open. Detectives encourage anyone who witnessed what happened but did not speak with officers at the scene to call 850-891-4200 or provide information anonymously through Crime Solvers at 850-574-TIPS.
