The Tallahassee Police Department (TPD) is marking its 200th anniversary, recognizing two centuries of service to the Tallahassee community. Founded in 1826, TPD has evolved alongside the city, adapting to changes while maintaining a focus on public safety.

Over the years, TPD has emphasized professional standards and accountability. The department has been accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) since 1986, making it tied for the longest continuously accredited law enforcement agency in the country. It has also held accreditation from the Commission for Florida Law Enforcement Accreditation (CFA) since 2002, reflecting ongoing compliance with national and state best practices.

Chief Lawrence Revell commented on this milestone: “Reaching 200 years of service is a powerful reminder of the responsibility we carry and the trust our community has placed in this Department for generations.” He added, “As we honor our past, we remain focused on serving Tallahassee with integrity today, while continuing to lead the department and law enforcement into the future.”

Currently, TPD is implementing modern policing strategies that include advanced training and new technology. The department continues to prioritize transparency, fairness, and proactive engagement as it addresses current challenges and prepares for future needs.

TPD expressed gratitude to Tallahassee residents for their support over two centuries and stated its intention to continue working in partnership with the community.
