On December 12, 2025, the Tallahassee Police Department (TPD) announced the arrest of Derrick McMillian, age 26, in connection with a homicide that took place near the entrance of University Courtyard Apartments on July 6.

The incident occurred at approximately 2:40 a.m. when TPD officers were dispersing a large crowd at 3030 South Adams Street and a shooting broke out. Officers found an adult male deceased from a gunshot wound at the entrance to University Courtyard Apartments located at 3025 South Adams Street.

Officers observed McMillian firing a weapon during the incident and initially took him into custody. However, he was released due to limited evidence available at that stage of the investigation.

A thorough investigation followed with assistance from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE). Authorities determined that McMillian had given inaccurate information to officers and confirmed that all shots fired matched his weapon. After gathering sufficient evidence and consulting with the State Attorney’s Office, detectives established probable cause for his arrest. McMillian has been charged with second degree murder.

“This arrest is a testament to TPD’s ongoing commitment to seeking justice and holding violent offenders accountable,” stated TPD in its announcement.

TPD encourages anyone with information about criminal activity to contact them at 850-891-4200 or provide tips anonymously by calling Crime Solvers at 850-574-TIPS.

Arrested: Derrick McMillian, 26, for second degree murder.
