The City of Tallahassee has reopened applications for its Adopt A Tree program, which provides free trees to eligible homeowners living within city limits. The initiative is aimed at expanding the city’s urban forest canopy by planting native and naturalized trees.
Homeowners can request up to four trees to be planted in their front yard, provided the location is within 100 feet of the roadway’s centerline. Participants must commit to watering each tree for a year. City staff will help determine where the trees should be placed and will handle the planting process.
Tree species offered this year are native or cultivars of native species from the southeastern United States and range in height from 5 to 8 feet. Planting is scheduled to begin in December, and trees will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.
“Adopt A Tree, which plants around 300 trees each year, is one of the programs that helps ensure the health of Tallahassee’s tree canopy. At 55 percent, the City boasts one of the highest percentages of tree coverage in the nation.”
Residents interested in participating can apply online at Talgov.com. Additional information is available by emailing adoptatree@talgov.com or calling 850-891-5450.
