At around 1:26 a.m. on December 10, the Tallahassee Fire Department (TFD) responded to a structure fire on Apalachee Parkway. Upon arrival, firefighters found significant flames coming from a two-story residential home. Crews entered the building and located the fire in the second-story living room, bringing it under control within seconds and fully extinguishing it in 15 minutes.

A primary search confirmed that all residents had exited the home. During their response, firefighters rescued a cat. One tenant was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation. According to TFD, “The fire is believed to be accidental in nature.” Leon County EMS, City of Tallahassee Utilities, and other public safety partners assisted at the scene.

Later that morning at 8:37 a.m., TFD responded to another residential structure fire on Winters Run. On arrival, crews saw heavy fire coming from another two-story residence. Due to concerns about structural collapse, firefighters began a defensive attack from outside the building. They rescued a dog by breaking a window and removing it safely from the home. A search determined that no people were inside during this incident.

“The cause of the second fire is currently under investigation,” TFD stated. The Leon County Sheriff’s Office, Leon County EMS, Talquin Electric Cooperative assisted at the scene, and the American Red Cross was requested to help those affected.

These incidents are noted as the third and fourth residential structure fires in December for TFD. As part of its Keep the Wreath Green initiative—an annual effort promoting fire safety during the holiday season—TFD will replace two additional green bulbs with red ones on its wreath display to mark these fires. The department encourages residents to stay aware of fire dangers and take steps to reduce risks during this period. More information about this initiative can be found at https://www.talgov.com/.
