Shalimar Beach Resort, a longstanding destination on Sanibel Island, has announced it will reopen to guests on September 28, 2025. The reopening date coincides with the third anniversary of Hurricane Ian’s landfall, which caused significant destruction across the island and led to the complete loss of the original resort.

The new Shalimar Beach Resort is the first hotel to be built on Sanibel Island in over four decades. The rebuilt property features modern coastal accommodations designed for both comfort and resilience against future storms while maintaining the character that has drawn visitors since its founding in 1959. Guests can choose from 33 newly constructed units, including private one- and two-bedroom villas with direct Gulf views and hotel studios offering partial water vistas.

Other amenities include a beachfront saltwater pool heated throughout the year, a rooftop terrace with sunrise and sunset views, fully equipped kitchens and private screened lanais in every unit, as well as access to 360 feet of private white-sand beach. Facilities also offer community BBQ areas and rentals for bikes, paddle boards, and cabanas.

Shalimar remains a fourth-generation family-owned business. Its owners have deep ties to Sanibel Island; they were married on the property’s beach. Their decision to rebuild was motivated by a desire to ensure future generations could enjoy what previous guests have experienced for decades.

“Hurricane Ian tested us in every possible way, but it also clarified our purpose,” says Shalimar’s owner, Sean Niesel. “Shalimar’s rebuild isn’t just about what we lost, but what we’ve gained: strength, perspective, and a renewed commitment to hospitality. As Sanibel Island visitors since 1990, we take great pride in being part of the island’s future for generations to come.”

The resort aims to continue its legacy as a gathering place for travelers seeking an authentic experience on Sanibel Island. Reservations are now open for fall 2025 stays via www.shalimar.com or by phone at (239) 472-1353.
