Relay For Life at Florida State University raised more than $34,000 in one day for cancer research and patient support, according to a March 25 announcement. The fundraising took place during several events leading up to the organization’s annual fundraiser scheduled for April 11.
The student organization works in partnership with the American Cancer Society and aims to support those affected by cancer. Kelsey Strigler, executive director of Relay For Life at FSU, said, “Relay For Life shows the power of students coming together for something bigger than themselves and creating a community of hope and support for those affected by cancer.” She added that seeing the community unite to fundraise is inspiring as they work toward supporting the mission of the American Cancer Society until there is a cure.
During Giving Tuesday 2025, more than 35 registered student organizations and 145 individuals participated in fundraising activities. Events included a giving event on Landis Green with performances and interactive activities. The group surpassed its initial goal of raising $20,000 by an additional $14,000—a reported increase of 290% compared to their previous year’s Giving Tuesday total.
Relay For Life at FSU also achieved national recognition after placing third during Fall Fundraising Week. This qualified them as one of the top colleges in an exclusive bracket challenge called Fall Fumble among America’s top fundraising universities. They secured first place in this competition and were named “College Champion” by the American Cancer Society.
Stormy McGivern, director of the FSU Office of Student Organizations and Involvement, said: “The Relay For Life student leaders have come into this year with a passion and drive that exceeds all expectations… Their success in the Fall Fumble is a testament to the work they’ve put in so far. We look forward to seeing the culmination of their year at Relay on April 11!”
A survivor and caregiver dinner sponsored by FSU College of Social Work was held on campus as part of these efforts. Melissa Schaldenbrand from ACS said: “These funds go toward patient services such as free rides to treatment, free lodging at ACS’ many Hope Lodges for cancer patients while they undergo treatment, as well as grants for medical facilities and programs.”
This year’s signature Relay For Life celebration will take place on April 11 starting at noon in the Student Union Ballrooms.
