IAM Union members from across Nebraska convened for the bi-annual meeting of the Nebraska State Council, the political arm of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM). The gathering focused on preparing for the upcoming midterm elections and strengthening advocacy efforts.

Delegates representing Locals 31, 180, 602, 612, 1569, and District 6 discussed legislative priorities and shared updates from their respective locals. A key topic was the importance of electing candidates who support labor issues such as collective bargaining rights, fair wages, and retirement security.

Nebraska State Council President Mike Helmink led the meeting with Secretary-Treasurer Dan Janak. Helmink highlighted the impact that elections have on union members and their families. “Elections have real consequences for our members and their families,” said Helmink. “If we want leaders who stand with working people, we need to stay organized, informed, and active. Political action is how we protect our contracts and our future.”

Ty Richardson, IAM Assistant Political Director, provided a national perspective on the midterm election landscape and stressed the importance of grassroots mobilization. Kevin Murch and Chris Tucker, IAM Midwest Territory International Representatives, expressed continued support for Nebraska’s political activities.

The council’s meeting reinforced its commitment to political engagement as a means to advance and defend the interests of IAM Union members and working families in Nebraska.
