Tamara Carpenter, a mother from Augusta, Georgia, has returned to higher education alongside her daughter, Taciana Carpenter, at Florida A&M University (FAMU). Tamara, 43, had previously earned an associate degree in nursing after graduating high school while pregnant with Taciana. Despite being advised not to apply to college during her senior year due to her pregnancy, she maintained her ambition of becoming a nurse.
“I missed out on the full college experience and since I was pregnant with Taciana during my senior year in high school, my then advisors told me not to apply to college,” Tamara said.
After more than two decades working as a surgical technologist and registered nurse, Tamara enrolled in FAMU’s RN-to-BSN online program in January 2025. She often turned to Taciana for help navigating the university’s online learning system. Their relationship evolved as they supported each other through academic challenges.
“My mom was calling me all the time, asking for help with her assignments,” Taciana shared. “It’s beautiful to have that support system, especially when you’re away from home.”
Taciana graduated Cum Laude with a psychology degree in August 2025 and plans to become a mental health counselor for veterans. Tamara is set to graduate this December. Both women balanced their studies with personal responsibilities—Tamara while raising children and Taciana while working as a pharmacy technician.
“I can’t wait to celebrate my mom as she finally gets to walk across that stage and celebrate this achievement.”
Tamara’s youngest daughter is also considering attending FAMU in the future. Tamara encourages others not to let circumstances limit their educational goals.
“Whether you’re a single parent or facing life’s challenges, don’t let your circumstances dictate your dreams. You are not your situation; keep pushing forward,” she said.
Taciana also encouraged students at FAMU to support their parents’ aspirations and contribute toward building family traditions at the university.
