The Texas State Council of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) held its recent meeting in Austin, gathering nearly 100 delegates and guests from across Texas. The event focused on strengthening the collective voice of working people in the state.
Taylor Rehmet, President of the Texas State Council, opened the meeting by highlighting the importance of strategic action and unity among members. “When we show up united, we win,” said Rehmet.
During the meeting, the Council announced its endorsement of Taylor Rehmet for Texas State Senate District 9. Rehmet is also President of IAM Local 776B and is recognized as a U.S. Air Force veteran, community organizer, and machinist. His leadership was described as accessible and action-oriented.
“Taylor understands the everyday struggles of working people because he’s lived them,” said IAM Southern Territory General Vice President Craig Martin. “He’s a fighter who leads with integrity, and he never forgets where he comes from. Texas workers deserve a champion like Taylor in the state Senate.”
Delegates heard from several labor leaders including Rick Levy, President of Texas AFL-CIO; Leonard Aguilar, Secretary-Treasurer of Texas AFL-CIO; and Claretta Allen, President of Smith County Central Labor Council. These speakers emphasized efforts to protect workers’ rights and promote economic fairness in Texas.
U.S. Representative Jasmine Crockett addressed attendees via video message, acknowledging IAM members for their commitment to defending workers’ rights and supporting key legislative issues.
Additional presentations were made by IAM Assistant Organizing Director Juan Eldridge and IAM Assistant Political and Legislative Director Loren Almeroth, who discussed recent successes in organizing efforts and legislative advocacy within the state.
“Every delegate in that room came ready to build power and not just for IAM members, but for every worker in Texas,” said Martin.
Other speakers included Tony Blevins, President of Guide Dogs of America | Tender Loving Canines; Shaun Jenkins and Derek Cearley, both Special Representatives for IAM Southern Territory; Sean Holland, Legislative Director for IAM District 142; Bo Delp, Executive Director at Texas Climate Jobs Project; and James Talarico (D-District 52), member of the Texas House of Representatives.
The Council continues its work to ensure that union members’ voices are represented both at workplaces and within communities across Texas.
