Florida State University’s School of Theatre is staging a production of “Footloose,” the musical based on the 1980s film. The show will run from February 20 to March 1 at the Richard G. Fallon Theatre.
The plot centers on Ren McCormack, a teenager who moves to Bomont, a small town where rock music and dancing are banned. Ren challenges these restrictions, leading local teenagers in an effort to overturn the ban.
Director Dewayne Barrett described the message of the production: “Ultimately, ‘Footloose’ endures as a story of healing and community. When the town finally dances, it is not rebellion; it is reconciliation.”
The musical includes songs from the original film such as “Holding Out for a Hero” and “Let’s Hear It for the Boy,” as well as new material created for stage performances. The cast features FSU students Alex Minarik (Ren McCormack), James Nelson (Reverend Shaw), Ally Babincak (Ariel Moore), and Margaret Giles (Vi Moore).
The creative team behind this production includes direction and choreography by Dewayne Barrett, music direction by Michael Norris, scenic design by Jesse Dreikosen, costume design by Sungwon An, sound design by Alroy Harry, and lighting design by Todd Wren.
Tickets are available online at tickets.theatre.fsu.edu. Additional details about upcoming productions and academic offerings can be found at theatre.fsu.edu.
“Footloose” is presented through special arrangement with Concord Theatricals.
