Florida State University (FSU) has launched IGNITE Tallahassee, a new 40,000-square-foot startup incubator located in Innovation Park. The facility aims to support deep-tech ventures in North Florida by providing the infrastructure and resources needed for startups to grow locally.

The initiative is a partnership between FSU and the Leon County Research and Development Authority. IGNITE offers tailored entrepreneurial services, mentorship, funding strategy guidance, and access to a network of partners. The programming includes workshops on topics such as SBIR/STTR proposal writing and intellectual property strategy.

“IGNITE is a valuable asset that will drive opportunities, build connections and ultimately facilitate job creation throughout the North Florida region,” said Alissa Costabile, IGNITE Program Director. “Florida’s success hinges on how well universities, businesses, and government work together to turn research into opportunity. IGNITE exemplifies how we can all collaborate to support economic development in our region.”

Historically, deep-tech startups in North Florida have faced challenges due to limited local support, often leading them to relocate elsewhere. This trend has contributed to brain drain and fewer job opportunities in the region. With IGNITE’s resources—including more than 30 labs, over 20 private offices, meeting rooms, and collaborative spaces—startups now have an environment designed for innovation without having to leave the area.

Collaborations with organizations such as TiE Tampa Bay and partnerships with academic researchers extend IGNITE’s reach within the broader community. Startups benefit from shared lab access and high-end equipment that help them avoid costly infrastructure investments.

“The opportunity IGNITE provides for startups to scale—while continuing research and development—without leaving the area is transformative for Tallahassee,” Costabile said.

Support from the National Science Foundation’s Accelerating Research Translation (ART) program contributes to this effort by helping universities translate research into real-world applications that benefit both society and the economy.

IGNITE’s location gives startups proximity to major research centers such as the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory, Center for Advanced Power Systems, High-Performance Materials Institute, Florida Center for Advanced Aero-Propulsion, as well as collaborations with FAMU, Tallahassee State College, and industry leader Danfoss.

Among its first clients are Piersica—which develops next-generation batteries; VSURGIC—which creates secure video platforms for surgical care; and QuarryBio—which is working on rapid diagnostics for gastrointestinal damage.

“IGNITE has been foundational to our growth—providing the specialized lab space, resources, and supportive community we need to push boundaries in next-generation energy storage. It’s enabled us to accelerate our technology and grow our team, all while staying rooted in Tallahassee’s expanding innovation ecosystem,” said Claudiu Bucur, Piersica founder and CEO.

The Grand Opening of IGNITE will take place during FSU’s Discovery Days on October 21, 2025. The event will feature presentations from incubator companies and information about programs available for tech entrepreneurs in North Florida.
