Florida State University’s Center for Intensive English Studies (CIES) has introduced an online version of its Intensive English Program. The initiative is designed to make English language instruction accessible globally, removing the need for a visa and allowing students from various countries to participate.

The new program targets intermediate-level English learners and offers live, interactive classes led by instructors with advanced degrees in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL). Students can enroll in up to five core courses: Writing, Grammar, Reading, Speaking, and Listening. Each course runs Monday through Thursday over seven weeks.

Patrick Kennell, director of CIES, said, “Expanding our English language instruction to an online format allows CIES to extend its reach far beyond Tallahassee, welcoming learners from around the world into the FSU community. This initiative not only supports global engagement but also strengthens FSU’s mission to be a leader in international education.”

CIES operates under The Graduate School at Florida State University and serves students aiming for success at American universities. All instructors hold master’s degrees in Teaching English as a Second Language. Traditionally, CIES has limited its in-person enrollment to 150 students per session to ensure personalized instruction.

As of fall 2022, most Intensive English Programs were delivered primarily in person; about 92% used this format. By offering an online option, CIES reduces barriers related to travel and living expenses for international students.

Research indicates that online intensive language programs can significantly improve key skills such as listening, speaking, reading, and writing compared to traditional classroom settings.

Angel Rios, instructor and testing coordinator at CIES stated: “Offering our high-quality services fully online opens up a new world of opportunity for students, parents and people all over the world who would like to dedicate time to learning the language but can’t relocate. Our program will give them the opportunity of being live with a teacher daily and receiving real-time feedback.”

Each course costs $520 and participants may enroll in multiple classes if they wish. Upon completion of their studies, students receive a Certificate of Completion from Florida State University along with their CEFR proficiency rating.

The program also aims to build an international community among participants by fostering cross-cultural connections alongside academic growth.

Enrollment is open for spring 2026 with limited space available. More information can be found on the official website: https://cies.fsu.edu/programs/online-intensive-english-classes
