Ambassador Thomas A. Shannon Jr., former Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, will deliver a lecture at Florida State University on March 26. The event is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. in The Globe Auditorium and is free and open to the public.
Shannon’s talk, titled “Strategic Leadership in the 21st Century: How You Can Shape the Emerging Global Order,” will address global transformation, the changing nature of international relations, and the role of younger generations in shaping future world affairs. The lecture is co-sponsored by the FSU College of Social Sciences and Public Policy’s Ruth K. and Shepard Broad International Lecture Series along with the Center for Global Engagement’s Engage Your World Speaker Series.
A reception will precede the event at 4 p.m. in The Globe lobby. Attendees are invited to park without an FSU permit after 4:30 p.m. in either the Traditions Parking Garage or Pensacola Parking Garage.
The Under Secretary for Political Affairs reports to the Secretary of State and manages daily operations at the Department of State, including handling international crises and overseeing U.S. foreign policy decisions.
Shannon earned his master’s degree and doctorate in politics from Oxford University after graduating with honors from William & Mary in government and philosophy in 1980. His diplomatic service spanned nearly thirty-five years until his retirement in February 2018, including roles as U.S. Ambassador to Brazil and Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs.
