Florida State University has named Louisa Blenman as the new executive director of International Programs. Blenman, who has been serving as interim director since May 2024, will officially begin her new role on December 5.

FSU Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs Jim Clark commented on the appointment: “FSU’s International Programs open doors to the world for our students, and Lou Blenman’s appointment as executive director marks an exciting new chapter. Her vision and experience will help us deepen global partnerships and create transformative opportunities that prepare students to lead in a rapidly changing world.”

Blenman brings three decades of experience in international education. She joined FSU International Programs in 2004 and became associate director in 2018. She also serves on boards related to each FSU international study center and with the FSU International Programs Association direct support organization.

Steve McDowell, assistant provost for International Initiatives at FSU, said: “Lou Blenman’s appointment as executive director reflects her years of leadership and expertise at FSU and in the field of study abroad. Her vision will ensure FSU continues to offer world-class global opportunities for our students.”

Florida State University is recognized nationally for its international education efforts. In the 2023-2024 academic year, it ranked tenth among public universities—and twelfth overall—for total student participation in study abroad programs, with 2,702 students involved globally. The university also led all public institutions (and was fourth overall) for long-term study abroad program participation.

This year marks two decades since the launch of FSU’s First Year Abroad program. A record 314 students enrolled this fall, reflecting the university’s ongoing commitment to providing international learning experiences.

“I appreciate Provost Clark’s confidence in me to lead the International Programs team as we build on our successful history and pursue new opportunities abroad,” Blenman said. “It is an honor to have so many talented colleagues, both domestically and internationally, who work tirelessly to provide transformative experiences for our students. I look forward to continuing to support the university’s strategic efforts and aspirations.”

Before joining International Programs at FSU, Blenman worked in London in study abroad administration after completing an internship at the Fulbright Commission. She holds a master’s degree from FSU’s College of Education (now College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences) earned in 1994, as well as an MBA from the College of Business completed in 2012.

Blenman takes over from Jim Pitts, who retired earlier this year after a 56-year career at Florida State University.
