The Festival of the Creative Arts at Florida State University will feature an event focused on weather, titled “It’s the Weather!” The event is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 7, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Challenger Learning Center of Tallahassee.

Faculty from FSU’s art history, art education, and music education departments are collaborating with staff from the Challenger Learning Center and the National Weather Service. The program aims to combine artistic perspectives with scientific insights about weather and nature.

Alan Hanstein, executive director of the Challenger Learning Center, said: “We’re happy to host ‘It’s the Weather!’ at the Challenger Learning Center as part of the Festival of the Creative Arts. It’s a fun way to connect science and creativity, especially for younger audiences, while introducing the importance of understanding weather as a core part of STEM learning.”

The event will include a presentation by Professor Stephanie Leitch that explores how weather has inspired both scientists and artists over centuries. She will discuss works ranging from Giorgione’s Renaissance painting “The Tempest” to modern cinematic depictions such as Tom Cruise’s stunt in “Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning.” Other activities planned are “weather weaving,” which turns meteorological data into art, and a screening of “Chance of Rain,” a short film reflecting on weather themes.

In addition to Saturday’s event, the Challenger Learning Center will host “Storytime Under the Stars” on Sunday, Feb. 8, from 6-7 p.m., featuring classic children’s stories in the Fogg Planetarium under simulated starlight.

The festival continues with additional programming including Arts-Health-Humanities Symposium VI on Tuesday, Feb. 10 at the Claude Pepper Center on campus. Events run through March 1.

More information and a complete schedule can be found on the Festival of the Creative Arts website.
