Florida State University College of Law is marking its 60th anniversary, commemorating six decades since it welcomed its first students in 1966. The college began with the goal of expanding access to legal education and preparing graduates for service in Florida and beyond.

The law school started with about 100 students under founding Dean Mason Ladd. Since then, it has developed a reputation for academic rigor, public engagement, and student-centered learning. Leadership over the years has included Joshua Morse III, L. Orin Slagle, Talbot “Sandy” D’Alemberte, Don Weidner, and current dean Erin O’Hara O’Connor.

“As we mark FSU Law’s 60th anniversary, we honor a legacy of excellence in scholarship, teaching and public service that has shaped generations of lawyers and strengthened communities across Florida and beyond,” said O’Hara O’Connor. “Our story is one of growth, innovation and an unwavering commitment to student success. While we proudly celebrate our past, we are also building momentum for the future as one of the nation’s top law schools.”

The college has expanded from its original single building to a campus with two academic buildings, four historic houses, a student lounge, specialized research centers, and various academic programs. Its influence extends through nationally recognized centers and clinics as well as an international study-abroad program at the University of Oxford in London.

FSU Law alumni have gone on to serve as judges, legislators, advocates, entrepreneurs, and community leaders both in Florida and globally. The faculty is noted for scholarship that is cited by courts and policymakers; they contribute to legal discourse across fields such as constitutional law, environmental policy, business regulation, technology, and public interest advocacy.

To celebrate this milestone year, FSU College of Law will host events including programming for alumni engagement and historical exhibits highlighting key people and moments from its history.
