Florida State University’s College of Social Sciences and Public Policy announced on Apr. 2 that it will launch a new Master of Science in Data and Society, starting in Fall 2026. The program will be offered through the Department of Sociology, with applications now open until July 1.

The university said the program is designed to prepare students to collect, analyze, and interpret data while considering social, ethical, and policy issues relevant to a world increasingly shaped by data. This initiative aims to meet growing demand for professionals who can address complex challenges across various sectors.

Tim Chapin, dean of the College of Social Sciences and Public Policy, said: “The M.S. in Data and Society is a vital addition to our college, reflecting our commitment to evidence-based decision-making and applied excellence. By blending sophisticated computational tools with a deep understanding of social and ethical contexts, we are empowering our students to not only navigate a data-driven world but to lead it with integrity and insight. This program ensures our graduates are uniquely prepared to solve complex challenges across the public and private sectors.”

The curriculum includes quantitative and qualitative research methods as well as training in computational tools and geographic information systems. It draws on expertise from multiple disciplines including sociology, economics, urban planning, political science, and geography. Students will complete independent research projects along with a capstone experience over three terms: fall, spring, and summer.

According to U.S. News & World Report rankings cited by the university’s announcement, FSU’s Department of Sociology ranks thirty-second among public universities nationwide.

Applicants do not need GRE scores but must submit official transcripts, a resume or curriculum vitae (CV), and three letters of recommendation. Out-of-state applicants from states participating in the Southern Regional Education Board Academic Common Market may qualify for in-state tuition rates.
