Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU) announced on March 26 that it is complying with the Florida Board of Governors’ decision to remove Introduction to Sociology (SYG 1000/2000) from the General Education core curriculum across the State University System.

The change means that SYG 2000 will no longer be part of FAMU’s General Education core. However, the university said this course and similar courses will still be available as required classes for certain degree programs and as electives. These courses will remain accessible to all undergraduate students within their academic programs.

FAMU said it remains committed to maintaining a strong academic curriculum while ensuring compliance with state directives. The university also emphasized its goal of providing students opportunities to explore a wide range of disciplines that support both academic and professional development.

To help students adjust, FAMU stated it would work closely with academic units and advisors so current and incoming students experience a smooth transition during these changes.

The broader impact of this update reflects ongoing adjustments in higher education curricula in response to statewide policies. FAMU’s approach aims to balance regulatory requirements with continued student access to diverse educational offerings.
