History was marked at Florida A&M University as Zayla Bryant and Kennedy Williams were inaugurated as the institution’s first all-female Student Government Association (SGA) president and vice president. The ceremony took place on Friday, September 25, in the Grand Ballroom, introducing a new group of student leaders for the 2025-2026 academic year.
Williams, who studies history pre-law, said, “I’m excited to leave a legacy that is rooted in true community and driven by the vision that every rattler is able to lead and have a positive impact on their communities if you do the work, stand for what you believe in and persevere. I hope that our administration will leave a legacy steeped in advocacy and consideration for all FAMU students.”
The event also recognized other officials elected to SGA positions. Nikiyah Brown was sworn in as the 55th Student Senate president; Harmony Person became the 55th Student Senate pro-tempore; and Jaylen Butler assumed the role of chief justice of the Student Supreme Court.
This year’s SGA administration extended its celebrations from a single day last year to an entire week of activities. The week began with service at New Mt. Zion AME Church on Sunday, September 21. An open house was held Monday at Efferson Student Union to give students an opportunity to meet their government representatives.
The program included workshops such as “Know Your Rights,” along with events like Rattlers in the Den: Open Mic and Dunk or Dodge. The festivities concluded with an Inauguration Ball honoring newly elected officials.
Bryant stated, “Alongside the heads of the Judicial and Legislative branch, we planned a week of fun and engaging events for the student body to learn more about the students who represent them and learn more about politics in general.”
