Duke Energy Ohio & Kentucky have introduced artificial intelligence technology to help protect their customers from scams. The company announced that the AI scans websites, social media platforms, and paid advertisements for threats such as fake ads and impostor helplines. When these threats are detected, they are flagged for removal with the relevant hosting platforms.
Amy Spiller, President of Duke Energy Ohio & Kentucky, said: “As scammers become more sophisticated, we are proactively working to protect customers from bad actors. We are committed to creating a secure platform for our customers to manage their energy account. If something doesn’t feel right, slow down, verify and report it – our team is here to help.”
The use of AI comes in response to a recent increase in scam reports across Duke Energy’s service areas. In 2025, there were thousands of scam reports with a notable rise in February when many customers sought bill assistance. The company has already used the new technology to remove fraudulent content online, including a paid search ad that impersonated Duke Energy with a fake customer service number.
In addition to deploying AI tools, Duke Energy joined forces with Better Business Bureau Cincinnati and other utilities during the 10th annual Utility Scam Awareness Day last November. The initiative aims to educate customers on how to identify and respond to scams.
Duke Energy advises its customers to be cautious if payment requests seem urgent or threatening. Customers should always verify information using only official contact details listed on their bills and report any suspected scams directly through Duke Energy’s Scam Reporting Tool or resources provided by the Better Business Bureau and Federal Trade Commission.
Scammers often demand immediate payment or threaten disconnection of service. They may also insist on unconventional payment methods such as prepaid cards or cryptocurrency—methods that Duke Energy does not accept.
Duke Energy Ohio & Kentucky serve nearly one million electric customers across Ohio and Kentucky as well as over half a million natural gas customers in those states.
