Approximately 56 workers at Discovery World, a science museum in Milwaukee, have voted to join the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM Union). The vote represents a major step for these employees as they seek better pay, improved benefits, and more influence over workplace decisions.

IAM Midwest Territory Special Representative Adante Balke commented on the outcome: “Congratulations to the Discovery World workers on making their voices heard and officially winning their union election. These dedicated employees are coming together to demand respect, fair wages, better benefits, and greater transparency in promotions and hiring. By standing united, they are now preparing to bargain collectively for a stronger future.”

Following the successful vote, the new union members plan to negotiate their first contract with Discovery World management. Their goals include securing wage increases, expanding career advancement opportunities, and ensuring that concerns can be raised without fear of retaliation. Collective bargaining will provide them with formal representation in discussions about their jobs.

During the organizing campaign, some workers expressed concerns about management’s actions. These included claims of anti-union tactics intended to discourage support for unionization and reports of an employee being terminated after advocating for the union.

Discovery World staff play a central role in running interactive exhibits, special events, and educational programs at the museum. Their work is considered vital to providing engaging experiences for families and visitors.

IAM Midwest Territory General Vice President Sam Cicinelli also addressed the development: “The IAM Union is proud to welcome these workers into the IAM family. We would like to give special thanks to Milwaukee Common Council Members Alderman Alex Brower, Alderwoman Marina Dimitrijevic, Alderperson JoCasta Zamarripa, and Alderman Robert J. Bauman for standing in solidarity with Discovery World workers and supporting their right to organize. We stand ready to support them as they move toward a strong first contract that reflects their value, protects their rights, and ensures Discovery World remains a place where workers and the community can thrive together.”

The IAM Union represents around 600,000 active and retired members across various industries such as aerospace, defense, transportation sectors including airlines and railroads, healthcare, automotive manufacturing, shipbuilding among others throughout North America.
