The City of Tallahassee has canceled its annual Winter Festival scheduled for Saturday, December 6, due to the high likelihood of rain throughout the day. The decision affects several planned activities, including the Jingle Bell Run, Nighttime Holiday Parade, lighting ceremony, and live entertainment.
In a statement from city officials, they explained: “With the high probability of rain continuing throughout today, Saturday, Dec. 6, Winter Festival is sadly canceled. While a difficult decision, as this spirited event is a cherished tradition for many, the safety of our community, event participants and staff is paramount.”
Despite the cancellation of the main festival events, some holiday activities will continue as planned if weather allows. Candy Cane Lane at McCarty Park will remain open for visitors on selected evenings in December. The park is part of the Chain of Parks along Park Avenue in downtown Tallahassee.
Other free festive events organized by the City of Tallahassee will proceed throughout December. These include Holiday Stroll through Cascades Park on December 13, Santa Calling on December 11 (with registration open through December 8), Cookies with Santa at Jack McLean Community Center on December 12, and Elf Night at Dorothy B. Oven Park on December 18.
The light display at Dorothy B. Oven Park remains open nightly until January 1. Visitors can walk or drive through the decorated grounds during posted hours.
Soul Santa events are also scheduled for children up to age 10 at Walker-Ford Community Center and LeVerne Payne Community Center on December 20. Registration began earlier this month.
Further details about these and other seasonal programs can be found on Talgov.com/WinterEvents or by contacting local community centers directly.
