Citrus County Visitors & Convention Bureau, known as Discover Crystal River, has introduced the Eco Compliance Partner Program to recognize manatee tour operators who demonstrate environmental responsibility and regulatory compliance. The initiative aims to support businesses that adhere to federal, state, and local regulations while promoting sustainable tourism practices in the region.
The program requires participating tour companies to be licensed by the U.S. Coast Guard and comply with all safety standards. Operators must also hold a Special Use Permit from the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service for Crystal River operations, provide educational briefings or videos on responsible manatee interaction, use eelgrass-safe anchoring systems, and observe rules regarding seasonal sanctuaries and protected zones.
Certified partners will receive an Eco Compliance Partner badge for marketing purposes and enjoy increased visibility through preferred listings on DiscoverCrystalRiverFL.com. Discover Crystal River also plans to launch a micro website focused on sustainability initiatives across Citrus County. Additional benefits include promotion in county-wide campaigns about sustainable tourism and access to collaboration opportunities with other eco-conscious partners.
Auvis Cole, Director of Discover Crystal River, stated: “This is about more than tourism. This is about protecting what makes Citrus County special—our natural environment, our wildlife, and the legacy we leave behind. Our tour operators are on the front lines of that mission.”
The Eco Compliance Partner Program aligns with Citrus County’s Tourism Strategic Plan under its Sustainability Pillar and supports ongoing restoration projects such as eelgrass replanting and water quality improvements. The initiative responds to increasing demand from travelers for eco-friendly destinations.
Cole added: “As more and more tourists are looking for eco-friendly and sustainable destinations, this program helps our community lead by example. By highlighting the companies that are doing things the right way, we send a clear message that responsible tourism is not just welcomed here it’s expected.”
