The U.S. Census Bureau will place a temporary embargo on the release of the 2024 American Community Survey (ACS) 1-year estimates starting September 9, 2025, at 10 a.m. Eastern Time. The embargo will be lifted and the data made public on September 11.
The ACS is recognized for providing detailed information about people and housing in the United States. It includes data such as language spoken at home, education levels, commuting patterns, employment status, mortgage and rent details, income levels, poverty rates, and health insurance coverage. For many of its more than forty topics, it remains the only source of local-level estimates.
According to the Census Bureau’s announcement: “The one-year statistics will be available to embargo subscribers beginning Sept. 9 at 10 a.m. ET for all states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, all congressional districts and metropolitan statistical areas, and other geographic areas with populations of 65,000 or more.”
Embargoed access to these statistics is limited to registered subscribers from September 9 at 10 a.m. until September 11 at 12:01 a.m., after which they become public. The agency notes that wire services and distribution outlets are not permitted to share news stories or data files before the official release date.
“All data products on data.census.gov, the API, summary files, and other tools will be made publicly available by 10 a.m. ET on Sept. 11,” according to the Census Bureau.
